World Cities Summit 2012 - Liveable and Sustainable Cities (02. -05.07.2012)

Urbanisation is taking place on an unprecedented scale, characterised by large populations and high rates of rural-urban migration. Cities have become the centres of economic development and innovation, the major source of movements for democratic and social change and a stimulus to culture. By 2050, about 70% of the world population will live in cities, based on the UN’s projection. Many of these cities are now facing the pressing need to provide adequate physical and social infrastructure to reduce poverty, attract investments, and ensure a healthy environment for their growing population. They also constantly grapple with the challenge of trying to harmonize economic attractiveness, clean environment and quality of life for their inhabitants. There is an urgent need for sustainable solutions to address these challenges, which are in turn beneficial to the increasingly competitive economies. The World Cities Summit 2012 will address these challenges and solutions through its focus on Liveable and Sustainable Cities.
